Author readings, talks, and workshops (virtual or in-person)

  • Book Talk — A read aloud of IN A BUTTON and time for students to ask questions about the book, writing process, book-making, buttons, or anything else. [30 minutes]

  • Book Talk + Activity — A read aloud, followed by Q&A with students and a button-noticing activity tailored for the age group. [50 minutes]

  • Workshops — for families (children+adults), educators, and parents/caregivers [40 minutes; 60 minutes; 90 minutes]

    • Family Button Play Workshop— Interactive experience for children alongside their caregivers, including various kinds of button play: looking, drawing, dreaming, sorting, comparing, stacking, rolling, pretending, and more.

    • Educator Workshop — Hands-on workshop designed to get educators thinking about all the ways they can explore buttons (and other ordinary objects) with their students. Relevant for all educators (formal or informal) of any subject area or grade level.

    • Parent/Caregiver Workshop — Session for parents and caregivers about ways to support children’s open-ended play and exploration with buttons and other everyday materials easily found at home. Interactive, approachable, playful. Tailored to group’s interests and requests. Can be designed as part “family button play” and part "parent/caregiver workshop.”

    • Student Writing Workshop — Learn as a group of writers, all writing together. Full of conversation about process and layered with a series of writing prompts designed for students to play with various ways to write to, about, and from the perspective of, small objects all around them. Can be tailored for students age 3-adult, and to any specific writing objectives.

      (All workshops also include read aloud and book Q&A.)
